What is Longjing Green Tea and Why is it Famous?

Longjing Green Tea, or Dragon Well Tea, is one of China’s most cherished teas. Known for its flat, jade-green leaves, delicate nutty aroma, and smooth, refreshing taste, it has been celebrated for centuries as a symbol of Chinese tea culture.

With a history spanning over 1,500 years, Longjing rose to prominence during the Qing Dynasty when Emperor Qianlong elevated it as an imperial tribute tea (gongpin). Its story is deeply intertwined with the scenic tea fields of Hangzhou, making it a cultural icon.

Where is Longjing Grown?

Longjing tea thrives in several regions across Zhejiang Province, each contributing to its unique character:

  1. West Lake (Xihu): The original and most prestigious area for Longjing, famed for its terroir and centuries-old techniques.
  2. Qiantang and Yuezhou: Wider production areas that bring Longjing's delicate flavor to more tea lovers worldwide.
  3. Beyond Zhejiang: Some Longjing varieties are now grown in neighboring provinces, offering new interpretations of this classic tea.

Each region brings subtle differences in taste and aroma, but all Longjing teas share a signature freshness and balance.

How to Brew Longjing Tea for the Best Flavor:

  1. Hot Brew:

    • Use 3-5g of Longjing leaves.
    • Steep in 150ml of water at 80-85°C for 1-2 minutes.
    • Enjoy the tea’s nutty aroma and lightly grassy notes.
  2. Cold Brew:

    • Add 2g of tea leaves to 250ml of cold water.
    • Steep in the fridge for 6-8 hours for a naturally sweet and smooth flavor.
  3. Flash Cold Brew:

    • Brew the tea hot for 1 minute, then cool with ice. This locks in freshness while reducing bitterness.

Pro Tip: Use glass or porcelain teaware to appreciate the beauty of the leaves as they unfurl.

What Makes Longjing Special?

  • Craftsmanship: Each leaf is hand-picked and pan-fried to preserve its bright green color and nutty aroma.
  • Seasonality: Spring teas, especially Mingqian Longjing (harvested before Qingming Festival), are highly prized for their fresh and delicate flavors.
